Northeast under risk of damaging wind, flooding and tornadoes
More than 75 million are in the storm zone this weekend, with the potential for damaging wind, tornadoes and heavy rainfall. More than 8 million are under a flood watch for parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, including Cleveland and Pittsburgh, where 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall Saturday -- possibly even 2 inches per hour during the heaviest thunderstorms. There is a line of storms expected to form midday over Ohio and then spread east through Pennsylvania for the afternoon and evening, reaching the coast and New York City around 11 p.m. -- but it will likely no longer be severe by then.

4 dead after vehicle crashes into Long Island nail salon, suspect charged with DWI
Four people were killed and nine others injured after a vehicle crashed into a Long Island nail salon on Friday, authorities said. Steven Schwally, 64, was driving a Chevy Traverse southbound at a high rate of speed through a parking lot in Deer Park at around 4:30 p.m. when he crossed a roadway and continued into another parking lot, Suffolk County Police said Saturday. Schwally then crashed through the front window of Hawaii Nail & Spa.

LGBTQ people say their mental health is positively impacted when states have protective laws
Growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s just outside of Akron, Ohio, Shane Stahl felt it was taboo to talk about being part of the LGBTQ+ community or about LGBTQ+ experiences. Stahl, 40, who identifies as a gay man, said that although he grew up in an accepting and supporting family, he didn't feel like it was possible to openly express himself and feared he would be ostracized from his community if he did so. As lawmakers in Ohio began to introduce -- and sometimes pass -- more anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, at both the local and the state level, Stahl said it took a toll on his mental health.

Martin Mull, the comic, actor and musician best known for roles in "Roseanne," "Clue," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and many others, has died at age 80, according to his daughter. In a career that spanned six decades, Mull was a familiar face in a wide variety of roles but specialized in playing egotistical or otherwise insufferable characters unaware of their own shortcomings.

Steve Bannon says he has no regrets as he heads to prison
On Monday, Steve Bannon will be behind bars in federal prison, but the ex-Trump White House adviser said Friday he's feeling great and has no regrets about defying Congress to avoid talking about his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. In fact, Bannon told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl that he considers himself a "political prisoner" and that his four-month sentence will only make his influence grow. Bannon is set to report to federal prison on Monday after the Supreme Court denied a request Friday to remain out of prison while he continues to appeal his contempt of Congress conviction.

Judge denies Alec Baldwin's bid to dismiss 'Rust' charge over firearm evidence
A New Mexico judge denied Alec Baldwin's bid to drop his involuntary manslaughter charge over firearm evidence stemming from the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" before his trial starts next month. In their request to dismiss the indictment, Baldwin's attorneys claimed the state "intentionally" destroyed key evidence -- the firearm involved in the shooting -- denying them the chance to review potentially exculpatory evidence. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer denied the request in an order issued on Friday, following arguments during a virtual hearing on Monday.

3 million student loan borrowers to be placed in payment pause
In response to court rulings earlier this week that blocked key components of a student loan policy, the Biden administration is planning to place about 3 million student loan borrowers into a monthslong payment pause. The pause would be very similar to the pandemic-era student loan moratorium -- borrowers would not need to make payments and interest would not accrue. The SAVE Plan, dubbed the most affordable plan for borrowers and President Joe Biden's hallmark surviving student debt reform effort, has been the target of two Republican-led lawsuits that argue the Biden administration has gone beyond its authority in aspects of the plan.

Dozens of sick and injured children have been evacuated from Gaza to seek medical treatment, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Israel's Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT). COGAT said in a post on the social platform X that 68 pediatric patients were able to cross with their companions via the Kerem Shalom border crossing to Egypt and other countries, in coordination with the U.S. government, Egyptian officials and the international community.

8-year-old girl dies after mom allegedly left her in car during high heat to go to work
A North Carolina mother has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter after she allegedly left her 8-year-old daughter in a hot car while at work and the girl died, police said. Officers responded Wednesday evening to reports of a child in critical condition inside a vehicle in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The child was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead early Thursday, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Dozens of Jan. 6 cases face uncertainty after Supreme Court narrows prosecutors' use of obstruction charge
The Supreme Court's ruling Friday narrowing a key obstruction statute used against more than 300 individuals charged in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol could affect dozens of cases brought by the Justice Department in the three years since prosecutors say a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters disrupted Congress' certification of his election loss. In a 6-3 opinion, the majority of the court ruled that prosecutors overstepped in using the charge against defendants in cases where defendants were unable to show their actions impaired the integrity of actual physical evidence used in a disrupted proceeding.
